Unity Login System With PHP and MySQL

In this tutorial, I will be showing how to create a login system in Unity using PHP and MySQL.

This tutorial requires a server with cPanel along with PHP and MySQLi (an improved version of MySQL).

Feel free to check the affordable premium VPS hosting or a cheaper Shared Hosting alternative.

Step 1: Set Up MySQL Database

  • Login into cPanel
  • Click on MySQL Databases in the DATABASES section

  • Under the "Create New Database" section type the name for your database then click "Create Database"

After the database is created we need to create a user that will be associated with it:

  • Type the Username under the "MySQL Users" section then type the password (or preferably use the Password Generator to generate a strong password). Don't forget to save the password somewhere, it will be needed later.

Lastly, we need to assign a user to a database with a specific set of permissions.

  • Under the "Add User To Database" section select the newly created user and database then click "Add"

After clicking "Add" you will be presented with a list of Privileges. Only select the privileges that you are planning to use in the future. The most common are DELETE, SELECT, INSERT, and UPDATE:

  • Click "Make Changes" to finalize

Step 2: Create MySQL Table

MySQL table will store the values provided by the users, such as username, email, password, etc.

  • Click on "phpMyAdmin" under the DATABASES section

  • Click on the newly created database then click on the SQL tab

  • Paste the code below into the query editor then click "Go"

The query above will create a new table 'sc_users' which will store the user data.

Step 3: Program Server-Side Logic

Server-side logic will consist of PHP scripts that will receive and process the Post data from Unity.

The first file is database.php which will connect to the MySQL database using the PHP MySQLi extension.

Replace DATABASE_USER, USER_PASSWORD, and DATABASE_NAME with your values.

The second file is register.php. This file will receive post data from Unity and insert a new user record into a database table.

And the last file is login.php which will receive the credentials and check them against the sc_users table.

  • Upload all 3 files to your public_html folder.

Step 4: Program Client Logic in Unity

Client logic will consist of a C# script that will post data to a PHP script.

  • Create a new script in Unity and name it SC_LoginSystem then paste the code below inside it:

Replace http://YOUR_SITE.COM/ with your value (This should be a root path where you uploaded PHP files). Also, make sure to use HTTPS if your server has an SSL Certificate installed.

  • Create a new GameObject and name it "LoginSystem"
  • Attach to SC_LoginSystem to LoginSystem Object

Press Play then click Register to create a new account or provide credentials to log in.
